Whether you simply want an introduction to London, an extensive tour of Britain’s castles, gardens and national parks or something in between: let us show you the sites. Tours can be by luxury, air-conditioned private car, on foot, by public transport or even by bicycle. The choice is yours.

    About Us

Rebus Tourist Guides are Mike and Hugh Dickson, cousins as it happens, who both hold the coveted Blue Badge (click at bottom of page for more). We have a wide range of interests, many years experience of guiding and a passion for meeting and looking after our clients. We are also part of an extensive network of guides so if we can’t do it the chances are we know someone who can!

    About Our Name

A Rebus is a visual pun in which pictures, symbols or letters are used to represent words or syllables. A rebus creates a visual representation of a word or name. It dates from times when illiteracy was the norm. Rebuses were particularly common in heraldry where they were used to identify the king, knights or particular sides fighting a battle!

    Hugh Dickson

Resident in London for 30 years I am originally from Lancashire in the Northwest. I spent many years in the wine trade and restaurant business during which time I started leading small groups on walking tours through the vineyard regions of the world and fell in love with guiding! I now hold Blue Badges for London and Cumbria The Lake District but as a driver guide with my own licensed and insured 7 seat vehicle I tour the entire country. Throw into the mix the fact that, academically, I am a zoologist, environmental scientist and ecologist on top of all the knowledge of history, gardens and architecture that you would expect from a guide then you end up with pretty rich and varied tours. As they say variety is the spice of life! Oh and in case you are worried we might be short of conversation my hobbies include painting, photography, skiing and hiking in the world’s mountainous regions.

    Guiding undertaken:

London overviews, walks, galleries, museums and monuments, day trips from London, driver guiding, up to 6 passengers in a spacious mini van, corporate hospitality work.

Extended tours throughout the UK and Europe. Wine tasting.

    Mike Dickson

Hi, my name is Mike and I am a fully qualified London Blue Badge guide. I live in west London with my wife, two teenage sons and two excitable miniature Dachshunds. Although born and bred in the north-west of England I have lived and worked in London for 35 years and now spend my time helping visitors to enjoy this great city of ours to the fullest extent. I am also a licensed driver-guide and able to take up to 4 guests out of town to see the great sights; houses, castles, gardens and the churches that dot our beautiful countryside and provincial towns.

I have a first class honours degree in War Studies from King’s College, London and a Masters in Naval History from Exeter so my area of expertise is British history, particularly our imperial past, and I am therefore well positioned to link much of what can be seen with the countries from which our visitors come.

Like cousin Hugh, I hope we would never be short of things to talk about. I follow politics in the UK, Europe and the USA as well as current affairs home and abroad. I enjoy all aspects of the countryside and like nothing more than a good walk with friends, family and dogs. Sport is an all-encompassing interest, particularly rugby and that very English game, cricket. Fine wine and good food are never far from my mind, having come from a family of wine merchants. I have played bridge most weeks for over 30 years but must confess to never have got the hang of the weak two overcall!
